Hybrid Vehicles Highlighted at 50th Annual Auto Recycling Convention Held at Novak Auto Parts

PITTSBURGH, Sept. 29, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Novak Auto Parts, located in New Brighton, Pennsylvania, hosted members of the Pennsylvania Automotive Recycling Trade Society (PARTS) as part of the 50th Annual Convention on September 26-27. PARTS is an affiliate state chapter of the national Automotive Recyclers Association (ARA).

Judy Moore, Assistant Director for the National Alternative Fuels Training Consortium (NAFTC), was the keynote speaker.  Moore shared safe recycling practices as well as the value that hybrid vehicles bring to the auto recycling industry.  

PennsylvaniaSenator Elder Vogel, Jr., was pleased that this year's convention was hosted in the greater Pittsburgh area. Though auto recycling facilities are often compared to the junk yards of the past, Doug Reinert, Past President of ARA and Chairman of the 2014 PARTS Events Committee, notes otherwise. According to Auto Alliance, a research and development report funded by auto manufacturers, the auto recycling industry each year:

• recycles enough steel to produce 13 million new vehicles
• reduces by 85 million barrels the amount of oil needed to manufacture new or replacement parts
• recycles nearly 85% of each vehicle's weight

Roger Novak, owner of Novak Auto Parts, points out that the industry's value is often overlooked, despite the fact that automobiles are recycled more than any other consumer product.  "We recycle Freon, transmission fluid, antifreeze, batteries, steel and most everything else. Our own trucks are fueled by recycled gasoline and our buildings are heated by recycled oil."

Novak Auto Parts' 20-acre site is located 35 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. The recycling facility maintains close to 1800 cars, making it one of the largest in the tri-state region of Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia.
