Household Life Insurance Assigned Patent

ALEXANDRIA, Va., May 23 -- Household Life Insurance, Jersey City, N.J., has been assigned a patent (8,185,743) developed by six co-inventors for "systems and methods for application locking using an internal and external checksum." The co-inventors are Paul A. Goott, Bridgewater, N.J., Alan Socolow, Toms River, N.J., Shree Verma, Dayton, N.J., Cheryl Neal, Pennington, N.J., Zeba Hyder, New York, and Michael J. Hemingway, South Bound Brook, N.J. The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: "Methods and systems for locking an application are described. A method includes receiving, over a communication network from a remote applicant, a signature for an application. The signature includes a date and time, an indication of agreement to the terms of the application, and verification information personal to the applicant and capable of confirming the applicant's identity. Based on the application and signature an internal checksum can be generated. The internal checksum is sent to a third party for generation of a second, external checksum. The external checksum is based on the internal checksum and the date and time the external checksum was generated. The internal and external checksums are associated with the application and then stored along with the application and signature."
