High school football: Douglass beats Star Spencer for All-City title [The Oklahoman, Oklahoma City]
Aug. 28--The Douglass Trojans hope history repeats itself.
Douglass beat Star Spencer 14-0 on Friday night in the All-City Preview championship game. The Trojans hope to continue that momentum for the next three months and take home the Class 4A state crown -- just like Star Spencer did a year ago.
Star was the 2009 All-City Preview champion and went on to win Class 4A state crown after beating Douglass in both title games.
"We won this championship, and there's better things to come," Douglass lineman Ravi Riley said. "We're gonna get the gold ball. This is just getting us pumped up to head back to the state championship game. That's all it's about now."
In the two mini-games Douglass played Friday night, three different runners -- Aliston Cobb, Ian Robinson and Diontay Washington -- ran for touchdowns to go with a 31-yard TD toss from Shon Bridges to Marcus Caddell.
"We ran the ball real well, but that just goes to how well we played up front," Douglass coach Willis Alexander said. "If we play well up front, we've got a chance to move the ball on anybody."
Douglass won the All-City Preview for the first time since 2007 -- when it beat Star 7-0. Star Spencer was making its sixth consecutive finals appearance.
Star offense trying to mesh
Star Spencer coach Terrell Love has a few playmakers to utilize on offense, but right now, he's mixing and matching to see who works best in what situation.
Sophomore quarterback Darion Bogus is a talented athlete but is still learning the job. Stevo Henderson and Kenneth Davis saw time at running back Friday, and Henderson is also the team's top returning receiver.
Love was disappointed with the play of his linebackers, especially in the semifinal win over Southeast. The coach expects linebacker to be one of the strengths of his defense.
Sanders with two more offers
Thursday was a good day for Heritage Hall junior Barry J. Sanders. After sitting out the first scrimmage against Holland Hall, he knew he was going to play against Oklahoma Christian School.
But he received some more good news beforehand as Sanders has added Alabama and Ole Miss to his list of offers. He now has nine offers and said earlier this summer that Notre Dame, Tennessee and Oklahoma State were his favorites.
In the scrimmage, Heritage Hall coach Andy Bogert said Sanders played both ways and had a nice run, but that wasn't what impressed him the most.
"He did a great job blocking," Bogert said. "He's worked really hard at that, and it's paying off."
Southeast hoping to rely on defense
With a win over John Marshall on Thursday and a 7-0 loss Friday to Star Spencer in the All-City Preview semifinals, Southeast sees promise in the 2010 season after a 2-8 campaign a year ago.
"Our strength is defensively right now," said safety/quarterback Jay Gogue, who has been playing since he was a freshman. "We worked hard this summer and we've got a group of guys that might not be the biggest or the strongest, but they're willing to give it their all."
Although the Spartans failed to score in Friday's two games, Gogue moved the offense well and had them inside the 10-yard line on the final play against Star Spencer. But a potential tying TD pass fell incomplete.
Robinson plays well for Millwood
Millwood hopes to add a key piece to its team on both sides of the ball early next week. The Falcons are expected to hear a verdict from the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association on Marc Robinson's hardship waiver.
Robinson, who transferred from Heritage Hall, played well at linebacker and tight end. He even had a few carries at running back, including a long run to set up a touchdown against Southeast.
Robinson's presence could become even more valuable after inside linebacker Larry Seals hurt his knee Friday against Douglass.
Millwood opens the season at home 7 p.m. Thursday against Star Spencer.
Rockets edge Crusaders
Christian Heritage Academy was knocking on the door several times for a score, but it was Mount St. Mary that ended up with the victory.
St. Mary scored on a touchdown pass with six seconds left by quarterback John Tener to pull out the win at CHA on Friday night.
CHA moved the ball down the field well, but turnovers kept coach John Merrell's club from finding the end zone.
Blumenthal, Miyake add to Antlers' weapons
Deer Creek is full of many talented seniors, but it was a pair of sophomores who came up big in the 21-7 scrimmage win against McLoud on Thursday night at Norman's Harve Collins Field.
Quarterback Joel Blumenthal is a star in the making, and he might have some company the next couple of years as running back Brennan Miyake has been a pleasant surprise.
"It's like I said before, we have a lot of offensive weapons," coach Grant Gower said. "Brennan has worked really hard, and he can do some big things."
Blumenthal showed his toughness, scoring on the final play of the scrimmage, breaking tackles before falling into the end zone.
Altus rebuilds with another big senior class
Altus graduated more than 20 seniors off last season's football team, but this year's Bulldogs are hoping to fill the holes and keep moving forward.
"We have 17 returning seniors and a few new seniors that didn't play last year," senior receiver/cornerback Bob Laub said. "We're still a young group. They've got to fill in the slots.
"Even though we lost a lot of starters, the defense and the offense are both holding together well. I have a pretty good feeling about our defense this year."
Laub was a key piece in last year's defense, grabbing eight interceptions, among the best in Class 5A.
