HCC Educational Foundation Announces New Board Members

COLUMBIA, S.C., Dec. 19 -- Howard Community College issued the following news release:

Howard Community College Educational Foundation, Inc. (HCCEF) Executive Director Missy Mattey announces the addition of five new members to the HCCEF Board of Directors, and the appointment of board chair and vice chair for fiscal year 2012. Christopher Marasco, a senior vice president at Howard Bank, has been appointed to the role of board chair. Mr. Marasco joined the HCCEF board in 2006 and previously served as vice chair. Barb Van Winkle, owner of Nancy Adams Personnel, has been appointed vice chair. Ms. Van Winkle has served on the HCCEF board since 1998 and served as chair from 2002 to 2006. New HCCEF board members include Del Karfonta, Eric Lewis, Elizabeth Rendon-Sherman, Deborah Rivkin, and Jahantab Siddiqui.

Del Karfonta

Mr. Karfonta, Howard County Chamber of Commerce's 2010 Business Person of the Year, is currently executive vice president, commercial banking, of The Columbia Bank. Mr. Karfonta has over 30 years of experience in the financial services industry. He has held several executive positions with Household International Corporation in both the banking division and in the finance division. He is actively involved in both the Baltimore and Howard County communities, serving as a past trustee of Roland Park Retirement Community, co-chair of the Howard Community College Campaign Council, past chair of the Howard County Chamber of Commerce, board member of the Maryland State Chamber of Commerce, board member of the American Heart Association, and board member of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Maryland Chapter. In addition, Mr. Karfonta chairs Howard County'sBusiness Alliance. He is also active in various programs supporting youth mentoring and educational partnerships. Mr. Karfonta is currently involved with ecological endeavors to raise awareness and promote environmentally sound products and practices.

Eric Lewis

Eric Lewis is a senior vice president and area executive of Howard County in the Baltimore Metro Region of BB&T.

A 2009 BB&T Sterling Award Recipient, he is responsible for managing the commercial loan portfolio of the Howard County area by supervising a team of lenders and associates, and also making connections with centers of influence in order to establish new mutual business relationships within the community. Eric's Commercial Lending Group in Howard County typically handles middle market loan requests ranging from 250,000 Dollars to 30,000,000 Dollars. Eric has been in the banking industry for over eleven years.

Prior to BB&T, Eric began his banking career in 1999 with HSBC Bank in New York City. During the four years with the organization, Eric was credit trained both in New York, NY, and London, England, before taking positions within HSBC as a senior credit analyst and a relationship manager. Eric joined BB&T and moved to the Baltimore area in 2003 to be closer to friends and family.

Since accepting the area executive role and moving to Howard County in May of 2010, Eric has joined the board of the Howard Community College Foundation, the board of the ARC of Howard County, as well as the Board of Directors of the Howard County Chamber of Commerce. He has also been active in events with the Howard County Library and the Howard County Housing Commission.

Eric received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance from the University of Maine in 1999. Having received a full athletic scholarship, he was a four year starter at cornerback on the Division 1-AA Maine Black Bears football team, earning All-Atlantic 10 Conference and All-Academic Atlantic 10 Conference honors.

Eric and his wife Ariel Lewis currently live in Ellicott City with their three month old daughter, Selena.

Elizabeth Rendon-Sherman

Elizabeth Rendon-Sherman is the CEO/CFO at Lingual Information System Technologies, Inc. (LG-TEK). LG-TEK is a woman-owned, veteran-owned, minority-owned and small and disadvantaged business that provides a variety of services to its myriad of government and private industry clients, including but not limited to: information technology, software/system development, training, security, linguistic support, and administrative services. Ms. Rendon-Sherman has over 30 years of professional experience in the intelligence community. She is the former chairman of the board for the Howard County Chamber of Commerce; the vice president of the Board of Trustees for The Columbia Festival of the Arts; special events chair and fundraising chair for the Fort Meade Alliance; board member of the ; and member of Howard Community College'sCampaign Council. Ms. Rendon-Sherman holds an M.S. in Administration (1988) from Central Michigan University and a B.S. in Information Systems Management (1986) from the University of Maryland.

Deborah R. Rivkin

Deborah R. Rivkin serves as the vice president of government affairs for Maryland at CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield and has been with CareFirst since December 2010. She is responsible for state legislative and regulatory activities in Maryland.

Deborah is very familiar with CareFirst's legislative and regulatory issues, serving as executive director and chief lobbyist for the League of Life and Health Insurers of Maryland, Inc., for the past 21 years. She also has served as retained counsel in Maryland for America's Health Insurance Plans (AHIP).

She is a graduate of the University of Maryland (B.S., cum laude, 1984) and Georgetown University Law Center (J.D., cum laude, 1987). Deborah comes to CareFirst after serving as counsel to the Baltimore law firm of Funk & Bolton P.A. since 1993, where she concentrated in the firm's Government Relations Practice Area. From 1987 to 1989, she was associated with the Baltimore law firm of Piper & Marbury. From 1989 until joining Funk & Bolton, Deborah was associated with the Baltimore law firm of Shapiro & Olander.

Deborah has been active in the community, serving as vice chair of the Board of Directors of the Baltimore-Washington Corridor Chamber of Commerce, the only regional chamber in Maryland. She also served on the board of HC DrugFree.

Jahantab Siddiqui

Jahantab Siddiqui currently serves as director of corporate plans, policy and communications at LG-TEK. Prior to that, he served as special assistant to United States Senator Barbara A. Mikulski and as statewide field director for the Mikulski for Senate committee.

His work with Senator Mikulski included serving as spokesperson and liaison to multiple federal agencies, local governments, businesses, non-profits and political constituencies. He has also worked as a public relations account executive at Havit Advertising and on several successful political campaigns in Maryland. As a former consultant to the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults and through his lobbying around higher education affordability issues, Mr. Siddiqui brings to HCCEF a unique perspective on challenges faced by young adults, particularly students.

A proud graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park, and Wilde Lake High School, the Howard county native was recently selected as one of Howard County's "Finest 39 Under 39" by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
