Preventing Water Loss Saves Time, Money, and Inconvenience for Homeowners
NOVATO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- It may have happened to you or to someone you know.A burst water pipe pours hundreds of gallons of water into a home while the homeowner is at work or on vacation, destroying valuable personal belongings and causing major property damage. To the insurance industry this is a $7-10 billion loss category every year.
To protect against these occurrences, Fireman's Fund Insurance Company has expanded its water loss protection program to include premium discounts to eligible policyholders who install a leak detection system like the FloLogic System®.
“Fireman’s Fund is interested in protecting homeowners from water losses which also aids in water conservation. Offering a premium discount to eligible policyholders will give homeowners the additional incentive to install a new device that may prevent such occurrences,” said Lyman Munson, vice president of risk services at Fireman’s Fund. Fireman’s Fund has recently added the FloLogic System to its list of approved products that stops water flow resulting from plumbing leaks before major property damage occurs. “This further enhances our overall strategy to prevent water losses and promote water conservation,” said Munson.
“The FloLogic System is an electrically actuated lead-free brass ball valve that is installed on the incoming water line anywhere after the water meter but before the point where the distribution lines come off the main. The FloLogic System thereby monitors all water flowing into the home whether resulting from a leak or water running down the drain,” said Chuck De Smet, President, FloLogic Inc. “The owner sets the amount of time the water can run uninterrupted before the System enters an alarm condition. At that time, an audible alarm sounds and the water is shut-off.”
The EPA reports that 13.8% of water used in homes across America is attributed to plumbing leaks. The AWWA reported a similar number. Nationwide, more than 1 trillion gallons of water leak from U.S. homes each year. That's why the EPA Water Sense program promoted “Fix a Leak Week” each March, to remind Americans to check their plumbing and irrigation systems for leaks. Fix a Leak Week 2010 saved millions of gallons of water across the nation. www.epa.gov/WaterSense/water_efficiency/fix_a_leak.html.
