David H. Long ’83 Named Hartwick’s 2014 Commencement Speaker

ONEONTA, N.Y., Jan. 24 -- Hartwick College issued the following news:

Hartwick College's 2014 Commencement speaker will be Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Liberty Mutual Insurance Group David H. Long, a member of the Hartwick College Class of 1983. Long will address the graduating class, their families, and the Hartwick community on Saturday, May 24, in a ceremony on the College campus.

"David Long is an extraordinary individual. His success validates the power of combining a great liberal arts education with the personal qualities of unquestionable integrity, unstinting determination, and unfailing emotional intelligence," said Hartwick College President Dr. Margaret L. Drugovich. "We are proud of David's accomplishments. We are delighted that he will take this opportunity to help our graduates envision the pathway to their own success."

Long is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Liberty Mutual Insurance Group, a Fortune 100 global insurance company with revenues of $36.9 billion in 2012. Based in Boston, MA, Liberty Mutual operates in more than 25 countries worldwide.

Long began his career with Liberty Mutual in 1985 as a Financial Analyst. Since then, he has held positions of increasing responsibility in the company's International Operations, Commercial Markets, Underwriting and Financial, and Mergers and Acquisitions segments. His most recent promotion to Chairman quickly followed his appointment as Chief Executive Officer in 2011, President and member of the Board of Directors of Liberty Mutual Group in 2010, President of Liberty International in 2009, and Executive Vice President and President of Liberty Mutual's Commercial Markets in 2005.

After earning a bachelor of arts degree in mathematics from Hartwick College in 1983, Long graduated first in his class from Boston College with a master's degree in finance. As an undergraduate at Hartwick, he was named a John Christopher Hartwick Scholar - the College's highest academic recognition - and was selected as an All-American on Hartwick's Division I Soccer team. He was inducted into the Hartwick College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004, and in 2013 he received the Distinguished Alumnus award from the Hartwick College Alumni Association. Long has also served on the College's Board of Trustees from 2002 until 2011. Long is married to Hartwick graduate Stephanie Isgur Long '84.
