Charlie Daniels to play in Mount Dora

July 14--The 77-year-old legendary fiddler Charlie Daniels' concert trail will make a stop in Mount Dora on Sept. 27.

The Charlie Daniels' Band will perform at 8 p.m.Sept. 27 at Elizabeth Evans Park, 100 S. Donnelly St.

The self-taught guitarist, who also plays the mandolin, is known for his fierce Southern country-rock fiddling and signature white cowboy hat.

During Daniels' five decades of making and writing music he has won numerous awards including a Grammy in 1979 for his "The Devil Went Down to Georgia, that scored heavily in both the country and pop markets.

He was raised in North Carolina listening to the Grand Ole Opry on Saturday nights. In the mid 1960s he moved to Nashville, where he worked as a session player for numerous artists.

In 1970 he released his first solo album titled Charlie Daniels, and since then he has repeatedly reached the top of the charts with blockbuster hits including "Fire on the Mountain" and "Long-Haired Country Boy."

Upcoming country singer Benton Blount and Casey Jamerson, who sings country and rock music, also will perform.

Gates open at 3 p.m.

Friends of library meeting

The Friends of the Marion Baysinger Memorial Library will hold its quarterly meeting at 10 a.m. Saturday at the library, 756 W. Broad St., Groveland.

Donna Williams, who has served as treasurer for many years for the group, will be honored. Williams is moving away from the area. The friends also will welcome new member Krista Guerrero.

Cake and punch will be served.

Clermont Toastmasters

The Clermont Toastmasters recently elected the following members: Wendy Stone as president; Gordie Allen as vice president of membership; Frank Hernandez, vice president of public relations; Tom Stone, vice president of education; Regina Cruz, secretary; Vicki Dortch, and Joel Testerman, sergeant at arms.

Clermont Toastmasters meets at 6:30 p.m. every Monday at Legacy Church, 100 Minnehaha Ave., Clermont.

Handbell ensemble

Magna Campana, a year-old handbell ensemble in Lake County, is accepting appointments for interviews for prospective members in August.

The successful candidates should have a musical background and desire to learn and develop personal handbell performance techniques.

The group has planned three public performances this season.

Rehearsals are 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays in the Enrichment Center at St. Paul Catholic Church, 1330 Sunshine Ave., Leesburg.

A nonperforming group is seeking members, who want to learn to play handbells or improve their skills. The group will rehearse from 1:45 to 3:15 p.m. Tuesdays beginning in September. No interview is required.

Free social services

The Leesburg Public Library, 100 E. Main St., offers free social services every Tuesday.

Representatives from Access Florida offer one-on-one assistance with applying for Medicaid, food-stamp and temporary cash assistance from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Trained SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders) volunteers are available from 10 a.m. to noon to provide information and counseling on Medicare, Medigap and long-term care options for people 65 and older.

Down on the farm

Uncle Donald's Farm, 2713 Griffin Ave., north of Lady Lake., is offering its "spend a day at the farm" for children ages 6 to 14 from 9:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. each Wednesday through Aug. 13.

Children can participate in farm activities such as collecting eggs, feeding the animals and brushing the horses. Programs will include nature studies and games.

Participants need to bring a bag lunch. Cost is $25 a child per day.
