A 20- to 50-year sentence was ordered Wednesday after a New Providence man admitted to being drunk and high on heroin when he caused a head-on fatal crash last summer. Thomas J. Gallagher Jr. will serve the sentence in state prison in exchange for his guilty plea. Meredith Demko, an 18-year-old graduate of Lampeter-Strasburg High School, died in the July 8 crash on Lampeter Road in West Lampeter Township.

Some six months after the Lancaster Barnstormers completed a championship season, more than 6,000 fans again packed the seats Thursday in a sea of red to cheer the Stormers on to a 6-5 victory over cross-river rival York.

The air quality of Lancaster County earned its best grade in 16 years, according to the American Lung Association's annual State of the Air report. For smog and year-round soot, Lancaster County saw modest improvements, reflecting a nationwide trend, the report said.

Kim Kann, 54, a Conestoga Township resident and a public schoolteacher, was escorted by police from a township meeting about proposed home rule Tuesday. She was issued a summary citation for disorderly conduct after she refused to stop making statements. The meeting at the Conestoga Fire Hall drew about 200 people.

Of the 15 insurers on the federal Affordable Care Act marketplace in Pennsylvania, just four are in compliance with policies that require them to cover tobacco-cessation aids and programs, a new report from the American Lung Association says. The agency says coverage should include including counseling and medications.

Representatives of the U.S. Department of Education'sOffice of Civil Rights met with members of the Franklin & Marshall College community during a visit here late last month. The visit was part of the office's investigation of F&M's policies and practices related to the handling of sexual violence and harassment complaints.

The Rev. Michael Messner returned home April 18 and attended two masses late last month at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish at 558 W. Walnut St., according to a spokesman for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Harrisburg. Messner is recuperating from critical injuries suffered in a fall from a balcony Feb. 22.

Willie Morant Jr., 44, of Lancaster, was being held in prison Monday after he reportedly led police on a 45-minute, high-speed chase and rammed a police cruiser April 26. Charges included two counts of aggravated assault - a felony. The pursuit started in Lancaster city and ended on Route 222 near Adamstown after police fired multiple shots but did not wound Morant.
