Paul Bohannon said something was missing at Mount Trashmore.
A local synagogue displayed a menorah during Hanukkah. Could Bohannon put up a Christmas tree?
The Ocean Lakes resident contacted Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation.
After some paperwork, and the addition of $500,000 in liability insurance added to his business insurance policy, he was given the go-ahead to decorate the tall tree near the YMCA side of the park and within view of Interstate 264.
Bohannon, who runs his own painting contractor business, headed out with his wife, Thea, armed with his ladder plus silver garland and huge glittery ornaments.
Others heard about his plan and offered to help. His Kellam High School Class of 1980 assisted with decorating, while his lawyer, Gary Byler, provided a generator to power the lights.
Businesses, including Dr. Johnny's Appliances and East Coast Appliance made donations.
Hilltop resident Len Marino, a Korean War veteran, added the finishing touch: the star.
In 2000 he provided a star for a group of Girl Scouts who decorated a tree in the park. The 82-year-old complimented Bohannon for his efforts to spread Christmas cheer: "He has a good heart."
