Black Hawk County renews insurance, medical contracts [Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier, Iowa]

June 14--WATERLOO, Iowa -- Black Hawk County will pay less for liability insurance next year but more to provide health care services to jail inmates.

Members of the county Board of Supervisors voted 4-0 Tuesday to approve unrelated contracts with the Iowa Communities Assurance Pool for property and risk management insurance and with NaphCare Inc., of Birmingham, Ala., to provide medical services for up to 250 inmates during the fiscal year starting July 1.

The insurance policies through ICAP actually reduce the annual payment from $547,844 this year to $514,231 in the coming year without any significant changes in coverage levels.

"This is basically a flat renewal for Black Hawk County," said Chris Fereday, representing PDCM Insurance. The county has been using the ICAP insurance pool -- essentially a consortium of counties pooling resources -- for eight years.

Board members also approved the jail medical services contract renewal with NaphCare for the coming fiscal year at $90.745 per month. That represents a 3.7 percent cost increase.

Sheriff Tony Thompson said the contract spells out how the increase is determined.

"It's 5 percent or the (Consumer Price Index), whichever is least," Thompson said. "Apparently the CPI was 3.7 percent."

In other business, board members approved a $2,750 contract with Benton'sSand and Gravel Inc. to demolish the barn at the Country View care center, 1410 W. Dunkerton Road.
