BRIEF: Insurer sues over $1 million Indygo Shiner policy [Lexington Herald-Leader]

Oct. 28--A Lloyd's of London underwriter of an insurance policy on the late stallion Indygo Shiner filed suit last week in U.S. District Court in Lexington against Summer Wind Equine, arguing that the insurer should not have to pay a $1 million policy because of where the horse died.

A 25 percent ownership interest in Indygo Shiner was insured in October 2012 for $1 million for Summer Wind, according to the lawsuit. One of the conditions of the policy was that the horse remain in the United States or Canada, the underwriter said. On Aug. 28, Indygo Shiner was euthanized in Argentina at age 15 after suffering a ruptured stomach, and Summer Wind filed for payment of the policy. Summer Wind owners Jane and Frank Lyon raced the horse along with Joseph LaCombe.

Thoroughbred stallions who stand in the Northern Hemisphere routinely "shuttle" to the Southern Hemisphere for their breeding season, which is on the opposite calendar. The son of A.P. Indy had stood in Argentina since 2003. In the United States, he stood for $8,500 at John Sikura's Hill 'n' Dale Farm in Lexington.
