June 10--Erik Meyer posted rounds of 76 and 78, and defeated Kevin Karabin in a sudden death playoff to win the Summer Championship at Glen Oak Country Club.

Karabin shot two rounds of 77 in the event from the championship tees, which had Carl Danzig (160), Anthony Sebastianelli (160) and Brian Mahlstedt Jr. (163) capping the top five.

Using the blue-white teeing grounds, Nick Urnoski unseated Jerry McGonigle as the king of the net division, also in a sudden death playoff net division after those two and John Culkin finished at 138. Lou Houck (142) was fourth and Gary Borgia (142) took fifth.

Canoe Club

Bob Zaleski and John Mikiewicz posted a 3-under- par 57 to win the Summer Slam by two shots over Chris and Corey Cuneo. In third at level par were Bill Gross and Bill Gaylord.

Top finishers in flight play were: First, Tony Libassi-Kevin Finley (62), James Farrell-Rick Gross (63), Carmen Caputo-Ryan Yarmel (64); Second, Don Ames-Robey Schnessel (64), Bob Jenkins-Jon Stevens (65), P.J. Farrell-Frank Petrillo (65); Third, Robert Farrell-Mike Manci (68), Jim Bonczek-Bob Bonczek (68), Carl Pazzaglia-Ed Dolinish (69); Fourth, Joe Karam-Quinn Karam (74), Ken Porzucek-Mike Gilhooley (76), Chris Calder-Frank Summa (77).

Jerry Dougherty's team had an eagle on No. 10, while the Bonczeks made a deuce on the par-4 ninth.

-- Karen Riviello nipped Gerri Ferguson by one stroke to win the 9-hole competition of the women's golf association weekly event, which was the total for the par 3s. Wendy Seamans topped Marilyn Striepeck by two in the 18-hole event.

C.C. of Scranton

Kerry Maloney and Chaz Dennis fired back-to-back rounds of 67 to win the Senior-Junior Tournament, which pairs a member over age 55 with one under 55.

That was enough to overtake medalists Mike Vassil, the seemingly ageless one, and J.S. Hope, who shot rounds of 66-69.

Joe Mesko and Mike Cummings posted scores of 62 and 63 to win a scorecard playoff with Mark Fowler and Ted Stampien Jr. in the net division of the championship flight.

Gross division winners and runners-up were: First flight, Chuck Scrimalli-Todd Habeeb (144), Joe Karam-Fran Hamm (144); Second, Jim O'Brien-Pat Murphy (151), Ron Yevitz-Walt Rosiecki (151). Net division top finishers were: First, Tom Tulaney-John Nealon (118), Don Mancuso-Brian Kerrigan (125); Second, John Ryan-Lou Palumbo (125), Bob Pettinato Sr.-Bob Pettinato Jr. (130).

-- Topping the field in the ladies day Criers Tournament, where the three worst holes are tossed at 80 percent handicap, Fran Durkin, Christine Yi, Linda Sproul, Mary Ann Gladis and Cindy Neubert were the low shooters in the gross division of their respective classes, with Yi posting the low score of the day. In the net division, Durkin, Patti Greco, Sproul, Sherry Moore and Sally O'Brien had the best results, with Sproul carding the lowest score.

Red Mill defeated Falls Bridge, 2-1 to regain the lead of the Emanon Golf League. The Mill was led by Mike Fereck's 37 and Jim Giodinas' 41. Sean Fortney was low for the Deli with a 40. Ashley Machine defeated Bryan Contracting, 2-1, led by Joe Graham's even-par 34 and Rich Brown's 38. Tom Bryan Sr. had a 38 for Bryan's.

O'Connor Plumbing and Selenski Insurance played to a split with Tom Kerrigan (35) and Bob Lampman leading O'Connor's. Tom Jordas' 40 was low for Selenski's. Powers took two of three from Cookies Travelers with Walt Volinski (40) leading Powers. Tim Stott had 35 for Cookies.

Fox Hill C.C.

Ranking first for the women's captain-and-crew event two weeks ago were Marcy Petrucelli, Brittany Holly, Carol Answini and Emma Jean Dente. Second were Joyce Ashley, Louise Hennigan, Joan Ferraro and Louise Falcone. Coming in third were Dodi Kuharchick, Marena Gibbons, Terry Clemente and Barb Giordano.

In last week's individual event, Judy Ellis, Donna Boone, Trudy Mesko and Aileen Mellow posted the low scores in their class in the gross division, while Mary Kenney and Roseann Lavelle showed the way in the low net.

Mike Montella and Jerry McGonigle emerged victorious in the Shootout Tournament, winning in the gross and net divisions, respectively.

Rounding out the top seven in the gross category were Tony Costanzo, Tom Tulaney, Bill Tarabek and Jeff Muir, who tied for fourth, and Mike Kerzetski and Paul Hirschler, who tied for sixth.

Behind McGonigle in the net division were Paul Petriello, Jerry Musheno, Jerry Zubert and Gary Sebastianelli, tied for fourth, and Pat Halvorsen and Scott Robinson, tied for sixth.

Glenmaura National

Oh Mukdasatit fired the low gross score of the week in the women's golf association's low gross and low net event, edging Jane Riggi by two among A players. Other low gross top two finishers were: B, Kathy Povanda and Joan Smargiassi; C, Jen Gallagher 102 and Sue Steindel 105; D, Kathy Murphy and Jessica Statsman. In the net category, in Class A, Joni Coyne and Sharon Hudacek; B, Rose DeAndrea, whose 67 was low, and Suzanne Ritterbeck; C, Lee Ann Kashnicki and Marie Paciotti; and D, Jean Wadas and Lynn Mineo.

Hole-in-one

Tim Doherty made his first hole-in-one on Saturday, acing the second hole of the Falls Nine at the Country Club of Scranton. Using a 7-iron on the 150-yard hole, his shot of perfection was witnessed by Greg Misterman, Steven Sorokanich and Jim Nasser.

Joann Smith, Therese Dux and Sue Springer shot a 78 to win the women's mixer. Dianne Simmons and Linda Soden were second with Veronica Gardas and Sandra Newell grabbing third.

Top three finishers in flight play were: First, Pip Tagle-Shirley Firmstone, Sue Rickard-Marie Fritz, Janette Krause-Theresa Fulkerson; Second, Beth Carmody-Donna Bluff, Judy Goyette-Joan Fowler, Pat McGinnis-Alice O'Neill.

Junior golf

Clinics for boys and girls will be held at Lakeland Golf Course on Thursday mornings and the Fern Hall Golf Course on Friday mornings.

The clinics are for boys and girls of all ages and skill levels. There are three sessions daily: 8:30-10 a.m. and 10:15-11:45 a.m. for ages 8-16 and a special session from 12-12:45 p.m. for ages 4-7. The eight-week program includes a refreshment after the clinics along with several pizza and golf days. The fee is $60 per golfer and more information is available at the website, www.nepajuniorgolf.weebly.com.

Clubs are available for juniors needing equipment.

During play in the Monday Morning Ladies League, Mary McAndrew had a long chip-in for par on the second hole, Ann Secor and Nancy Spencer there to witness the shot. Mary DePalma had three pars and finished her round with 40.

-- Jeremy Choplosky has been playing great golf in the Gin's League, where he has usually been turning in scores of even par or 1 under. But his recent round was his best of the year as he carded a 3-under 29. Despite that score, he and his partner Dave Benedict fell behind Will Kostick-Kevin Mulhern in last week's play.

-- Tuesday's Lakeland Swingers winners two weeks ago were Mary Nicosia and Tina Fassett, both with 44s, but that score was topped by new league member Caroline Quinn, who had the hot putter, needing only 13 strokes for her nine holes, which ended with a score of 43.

-- It was a landmark evening for Kathy Lee in the in the Thursday Evening Happy Hackers as she fired a career-best 38 with Hoda Kotb on the bag. Allyson Hess posted a 41.

-- Bob and Debbie Hill have been leading the Friday evening's couples league, shooting 33 and 35. Karen and Joe Kowalchik matched that 35 this week, while Bud and Jodi Rogalla followed with 36.

In six weeks of play, a fourth team has ascended to the top of the Thursday Night League, with Devon Brown and Gregg Ehrgood the new leaders at 37.5 points, one-half point clear of Tom Guse and John Orloski. Three out of first is the duo of Charlie Piechowicz-Steve Soroka. Soroka was the triple-crown winner for the week, shooting the low gross of 38, with low net of 30 and sharing birdie honors with Mike Sedock, Dave Rolston, Al Bendinsky, Jim DePew, Ken Setzer and Bob Capple, all of whom made one. John Orloski had the most points individual points and he and Dennis Kelly led the way with five pars apiece.

-- John Wehrum of the Men's Senior League had a birdie this week with a net of 33 but low net for the week belonged to Bucky McConnell with a 31. Gene Hopkins is still in first place but Bob Corrigan right on his tail, just one point behind.

Red Maples G.C.

The Honey Maples ladies league had a low putt contest with Joann Butler winning her flight. Emily Wimmer and Carole Macguire tied for low putts in their flight but the final winner was Nancy Shurter.

Pam Bunero, Carole Maguire and Shurter were winners in the low net division of the opening-week tournament. Winners of the low gross event were Anne Berliner, Lynn Roettger and Joann DeDominicis.

Scott Greens G.C.

Team Heavy Hitters, Greg Walsh and Clytie Miller, paved the way in the Wednesday Evening Mixed League, shooting a 1-under 32. Tied for second place were Teams D.J. Mac, Jill McAlarney and Dan Davis, and Team Eagles, Cathy and Al Nicholls, with scores of 35.

The shot of the night came from McAlarney on No. 8. Resting on a tree root alongside No. 8 green, and with her options for a drop not any better, she pitched off the root over a four-foot embankment and rolled it 20 feet across the green and in for birdie.

Bill Kosydar of Team Stroke of Luck had a little bit more than luck working for him after knocking his tee shot onto the green on No. 7 to set up his birdie putt. Kevin Naniewicz, Team Sonny-n-Me, had the longest drive with his 200-yard bullet that reached No. 9 green. Team Swing Low took turns providing birdie opportunities, with Mary Grace hitting the fourth and Sheila O'Brien knocking it onto No. 6.

-- In the Monday Madness league Dave Oakley and Chris Hill took the night by storm with a low net of 27, 6-under par. League leaders John Borgna and Mark Kokindo held their spot by finishing second for the week, along with TIm Pane and Rob Vail with scores of 29.

-- And then there was only one as Lynne and Hank Hewitt defeated Pat and Fran Jolley in the battle of unbeatens in the Scramblers Mixed League.

Pat Bianchi drilled a 15-foot putt on the last hole to lead her and Rich Bianchi to a 1-up victory over the previously undefeated team of Liz and Mike Sokoloski. In other league action, Rich Burkhart read the putts and his wife Bev knocked them in every one as they defeated Kim Nudelman and John Boone.

Scranton Muni

Nick Kochis shot a 1-under 35 and took 11 points from Jerry Gronski in the Gronski Auto Golf League. Terry Ziegler carded 39, getting nine points from Les Hand. Joe Ogen posted 41 and also won 11 points.

Position night is Friday, with Hand, Kochis, Ziegler and Don Trego fighting for the top spot.

Wemberly Hills G.C.

The team of Tommy Gelches and Tony "Zaz" Zalazny shocked the tournament field -- and perhaps even themselves -- as they claimed their first major of the year by winning the Throop Golf League's Memorial Tournament. Firing a 3-under-par score and waiting patiently for everyone to finish, the champs were forced into a playoff when the final twosome of the event, Steve Gedrich and Chad Vinansky, tied them.

After matching pars on the first hole, Zalazny birdied the second hole in near darkness to secure the win. It was Zazazny's third birdie on No. 2 for the day in the unique 11-hole event that saw everyone in the field end on No. 2. Finishing tied for third at 2-under were the teams of: Jerry Burns Jr.-Joe Garrick, Mike Tellip-Lanny Ross, Artie Williams-Frank Gosko, and Joe Zagursky-Dave Yarosheki.
