Learn about Medicare at upcoming events in Monroeville, Butler County

Sept. 10--A health care company is coming to Monroeville and other communities in Allegheny and Butler counties to educate people on Medicare.

UnitedHealthcare, a health care and insurance provider based in Minnesota, will take part in National Medicare Education Week on Sept. 15-21. Representatives from the company will be at UPMC East starting at 10 a.m. Sept. 21. The free event will take place in the building's conference rooms B and C.

"In October, more than 300,000 seniors and other Medicare beneficiaries in Allegheny and Butler counties will be eligible to enroll in or change their Medicare plans during Medicare's Annual Enrollment Period," said Jamie Altman, a UnitedHealthcare spokeswoman.

Medicare's Annual Enrollment Period is from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7.

"Unfortunately, nearly 2 in 5 Medicare beneficiaries say they have a 'fair' or 'poor' understanding of Medicare," she said in an email, referencing the company's 2017 Consumer Sentiment Survey.

The events are designed to prepare people with the knowledge they need to make confident, informed decisions about their Medicare coverage, said a UnitedHealthcare news release.

Medicare experts will be available to speak one-on-one with attendees and Walgreens will be on site to provide blood pressure readings and host "Ask a Pharmacist" booths.

Other events in the area include:

Sept. 17: Cumberland Woods Village of UPMC, 700 Cumberland Woods Drive, Allison Park.

Sept. 19: Sechler Law Firm, 183 Scharberry Lane, Mars.

Both events start at 10 a.m.
