Sen. Ben Nelson announced today that he will not renew his contract as CEO of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). His current term ends on Jan. 31, 2016.
He will ultimately return to his private law practice in Nebraska and Washington, D.C., and spend more time with his family, NAIC announced in a news release. Senator Nelson plans to be available in a consulting role to the NAIC as needed during this transition.
"I have truly appreciated the opportunity to return to the NAIC following my retirement from the U.S. Senate," Sen. Nelson said. "October 1, 2015 marks 50 years since I commenced my work supporting state insurance regulation."
Senator Nelson began his career with the Nebraska Department of Insurance on Oct. 1, 1965 as Supervisor of Claims and Inquiries, served as Director of the Nebraska Department from 1975-1976, and as Executive Vice President of the NAIC from 1982-1985. He served as Governor of Nebraska from 1991-1999 and as a United States Senator from 2001-2013. Senator Nelson was hired as NAIC CEO in January 2013.
"On behalf of the officers and members of the NAIC, I want to thank Sen. Nelson for his service to our organization," said Monica J. Lindeen, NAIC President and Montana Insurance Commissioner. "His unique combination of experience made him a natural choice to lead our organization. He has been a staunch proponent of the state-based regulatory system both here and abroad. We wish him all the best in his future ventures."
