CalPERS Appoints New Deputy Executive Officer of Benefits
SACRAMENTO, Calif., Aug. 19 -- The California Public Employees Retirement System issued the following news release:
Ann Boynton has been named Deputy Executive Officer of Benefits for the California Public Employees' Retirement System, CalPERS Chief Executive Officer Anne Stausboll announced today.
In her new job, Boynton will oversee CalPERS retirement programs, which serve 1.6 million active and retired state and local public employees. She also will have executive oversight of CalPERS health care program, which pays more than $5 billion annually for health care services on behalf of 1.3 million members and their families. She begins her job on September 1.
"Ann Boynton brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of health care issues to a critically important job," Stausboll said. "She's worked extensively in the private sector and in government and knows how to bring people together to get things done. Her skills will help us control costs, and her vision will help us provide health security to our members in this fast-changing, dynamic environment."
Boynton comes to CalPERS from the legal and consulting firm Manatt, Phelps and Phillips, where as a managing director she worked on health care and health care information technology issues. Prior to that she served as Undersecretary at the California Health and Human Services Agency, helping to oversee state and federal health care and social services programs. From February 2005 to 2006, she was Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's Chief Deputy Cabinet Secretary.
Boynton holds a bachelor' degree in English and philosophy from California Lutheran University and a master's degree in English from the University of Notre Dame.
As CalPERS Deputy Executive Officer of Benefits, Boynton will advise the Board and work directly with CalPERS staff on the strategic direction of the System's health benefit programs, including health plan negotiations and health plan design. She also will oversee retirement policy, programs and customer service.
