Vernon receives rebate check from insurance provider [Journal Inquirer, Manchester, Conn.]

Sep. 12—VERNON — The town has received a rebate check of nearly $34,000 from its liability insurance provider, town officials announced.

The check was presented to the town last week by the member-owned nonprofit, Connecticut Interlocal Risk Management Agency, as part of the town's pro-rated share of this year's equity distribution for agency members, officials said.

The agency provides liability insurance and risk management services for the town and Vernon's Board of Education, in addition to other nearby municipalities, school districts, and local public agencies.

Town Administrator Michael Purcaro said today that both the number of past claims the town has filed and what the town is currently doing to reduce the risk of future claims influenced the amount the town received for a rebate check.

"Through our award-winning risk management program, we have established best practices that are employed across all our departments and are modeled by other municipalities throughout the state," Purcaro said.

Purcaro said the town has developed a standardized system shared by both the town and Board of Education for analyzing and preventing injuries and accidents. He also said that the town and school board "proactively talk about ways to prevent claims and losses from happening."

Both the town and school board hold regular health and safety as well as risk management meetings to "protect residents, staff, and community assets," town officials said.

Mayor Dan Champagne said last week that the town's ongoing focus on risk management "directly benefits our employees and taxpayers."

Purcaro said the funds from the rebate check would go back into the town's general fund as unbudgeted revenue.

"It's always good to get money like that," Purcaro said.
