Two applicants vie for vacant Gloucester School Board seat
Daily Press (Newport News, VA)
June 04--Two people have submitted applications to fill the soon-to-be vacant seat on the Gloucester County School Board.
York District representative Carla Hook announced in March that she is resigning as of June 15 because her family is moving. The school division received no applications for the seat in April and extended the deadline to May 31.
Rip Rowland, who served on the School Board as the York representative from 1993 to 1997, and Elisa Nelson, a Gloucester alumni who owns her own insurance business in Hayes, both submitted letters of interest.
Rowland is the director of of operations for JP Harvey Engineering Solutions, according to his resume, and was vice chairman of the Gloucester School Board from 1994 to 1995.
Nelson is the president of the Page Middle School PTA and has served on both the school division's parent advisory board and the redistricting committee.
Both applicants and up to two supporters will be able to speak to the School Board on June 13, according to a news release from the school division.
The School Board will interview candidates in a closed meeting at 5:30 p.m. on June 22, after which an appointment should be announced, the school division said. The interim member is expected to serve from July 5 to Dec. 31.
The York District School Board seat will be up for election in November.
Hubbard can be reached by phone at 757-298-5834.
