March 10--President Trump will get his military parade -- but it'll be a tankless endeavor.
Pentagon officials are planning Trump's hotly debated spectacle for Veterans Day, a Defense Department memo revealed Friday.
Tanks, however, will not appear in the Nov. 11 procession -- as they could damage the streets of Washington, D.C. -- but the event will include plenty of airplane flyovers, according to the office of Defense Secretary James Mattis, whose staff will coordinate the festivities.
The event will "focus on the contributions of our Veterans throughout the history of the U.S. Military, starting from the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 to today, with an emphasis on the price of freedom," according to the memo.
Trump was delighted by France's Bastille Day celebration during a visit to Paris last July, and praised the parade months later, saying, "We're going to have to try and top it."
Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have slammed the idea as an authoritarian display of force and criticized the proposed parade's hefty price tag.
While the Pentagon memo did not include a cost estimate, taxpayers can expect to fork over between $10 and $30 million for the gala, White House budget director Mick Mulvaney recently told Congress.
Trump thinks the parade would boost the spirit of America.
"We have a great country and we should be celebrating our country," he told Fox News in a recent interview.
