Viewers of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s daily press briefings on the unfolding coronavirus crisis in New York got a bonus display of fireworks on Friday.
After a week in which the Democratic governor and President Donald Trump butted heads over the COVID-19 crisis and the respective roles of the federal and state governments, the latest clash occurred on live television.
Trump, just after noon, posted on Twitter that the New York governor should “spend more time ‘doing’ and less time ‘complaining’ Get out there and get the job done. Stop talking!’
When a reporter read the tweets to Cuomo during the briefing, Cuomo responded to the criticism in kind.
“First of all, If he’s sitting home watching TV, maybe he should get up and go to work,” Cuomo said.
Cuomo said he has repeatedly thanked Trump for supplying aid to New York, including the USNS Comfort hospital ship and a field hospital.
"How many times do you want me to say thank you for doing your job?" Cuomo said.
“What am I supposed to do, send a bouquet of flowers? I said thank you, thank you, thank you,”
