Statement on the Senate’s Revised Better Care Reconciliation Act

CaliforniaHealth+ Advocates President and CEO Carmela Castellano-Garcia released the following statement today in response to the modified version of the Better Care Reconciliation Act:

"The Senate promised to start from scratch, yet the revised BCRA legislation is essentially the House bill that repeals the ACA and fundamentally dismantles the Medicaid program," said Castellano-Garcia. "Let's be very clear – any legislation that takes health care away from millions of Americans is not a viable replacement for the ACA."

The Better Care Reconciliation Act, much like the House-passed American Health Care Act (AHCA), rolls back the Medicaid Expansion, which has proven to be one of the most important aspects of the ACA. The Medi-Cal program provides comprehensive coverage to some of the most chronically ill people who have no other healthcare options. Both bills would fundamentally restructure the Medicaid program and the resulting cuts that start in 2019 will force states to limit eligibility and benefits, eliminating access to care for millions of hard-working families.

Ultimately, just like the AHCA, the Better Care Reconciliation Act will have a catastrophic impact on community health centers and the patients that rely on them.
