Smith, Bethel Park and Evey True Value Hardware Host Free Shredding Event in August

Targeted News Service

MT. LEBANON, Pa., July 25 -- The Pennsylvania State Senate Democrats issued the following news release on the behalf of Pennsylvania State Sen. Matt Smith:

State Senator Matt Smith (D-Allegheny/Washington), the Municipality of Bethel Park, and Evey True Value Hardware announced plans for a free shredding event for constituents.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.August 16 in the parking lot of the Bethel Park High School, 309 Church Road in Bethel Park.

Following a recently held identity theft seminar for seniors in July, Smith says that he worked with the Municipality of Bethel Park and community partners to offer ways to protect area residents from identity theft.

"We're offering the annual shredding event to continue outreach on an issue that can be devastating, particularly to seniors who are targeted by scams," Smith said. "Each year, we receive more positive feedback from constituents who utilize the service."

Residents may bring up to five bags or boxes of unwanted documents containing personal information for secure destruction. The event is for individuals only.

Bethel Park Council President Timothy Moury said, "We are very happy to partner with state Senator Smith to help provide such an important service to the residents of Bethel Park to safely dispose of personal documents."

Common types of unwanted items that should be shredded may include credit card statements or applications, bank statements, canceled checks, old income tax information, insurance and medical records, and materials with identifying personal information like Social Security, credit card, or bank account numbers. Phonebooks, newspaper, and bound books cannot be accepted.

"Senator Smith and I both have a passion for our friends and families from Bethel Park and all of the South Hills area," said Andy Amrhein of Evey True Value Hardware. "I am proud to be able to help Matt bring such a beneficial event to our community."

Document shredding will occur on-site with the shredded paper later to be recycled. To accommodate the high volume of material to be shredded, additional secure collection trucks will be on site. All shredding will be performed by a local National Association for Information Destruction and Mobile Shredding Association member company.

More information is available through Smith's website, www.SenatorMattSmith.com or by calling his office at 412-571-2169.
