Slaughter Statement on CBO Analysis of Republican Bill to Repeal the Affordable Care Act

Congressional Documents & Publications

WASHINGTON, DC -- Congresswoman Louise Slaughter (NY-25) issued the following statement in reaction to the Congressional Budget Office's analysis today that found that 23 million Americans would be uninsured under the Republicans' bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act. Slaughter brought the Affordable Care Act to the floor of the House of Representatives in 2009 as Chairwoman of the Rules Committee.

"Republican leaders shattered the integrity of the legislative process when they jammed this bill through the House without a score from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office outlining its costs and impacts. They moved so quickly to rip away health care from millions of people that they didn't even hold a single hearing or listen to any experts. This plan was practically thrown together on the back of a napkin in a backroom somewhere despite the fact that it will impact one-sixth of our nation's economy. The score released from the CBO today shows why Republicans moved so hastily while keeping Americans in the dark. The Republican repeal bill would leave 23 million uninsured, including 14 million in the first year alone. It would decimate Medicaid, disproportionately impacting those in nursing homes, and ransack the funds that many seniors and people living with disabilities rely on for care. This repeal bill would erase the increased standard of care all Americans are seeing under the health reform law. The CBO has also confirmed that it would gut protections for people with preexisting conditions, causing their premiums to skyrocket and pricing many people of the market entirely. House Republicans have been waiting for this CBO score before advancing this bill. Instead of sending it to the Senate, they should put it in the shredder where it belongs. It is past time for Congressional Republicans to listen to the American people and come together to improve the Affordable Care Act."
