Sessions offer info on health insurance, benefits

Oct. 24--AARP New Mexico will conduct two informational sessions on the basics of Social Security and Medicare at the group's office in Santa Fe.

The first session, scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27, will focus on Social Security. The second session, at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, will focus on Medicare.

"We want to give people the opportunity to learn more about these programs because they can be confusing and hard to navigate when you're first learning about them," said Gene Varela, AARP New Mexico's state director. "This will be a really informal discussion where people can just come by and visit with staff and volunteers that know these programs well."

The free sessions are open to the public. The state office is located at 535 Cerrillos Road, Suite A. For more information, call Beth Velasquez at 946-3605.

Also, representatives of the New Mexico Insurance Exchange and the Office of the Superintendent of Insurance will be at the Santa Fe Indian School from noon to 4 p.m. Monday to handle questions about individual health insurance under the Affordable Care Act.

During the Outreach Road Show, the state's insurance exchange and the insurance office will share information about the individual health insurance plans available on the state's online network, beWellnm.com, and about the different ways consumers can get answers to questions about their health plans. Open enrollment on the exchange starts Nov. 1.

The event is in The "U Building" lecture hall at the Indian School campus, 1501 Cerrillos Road.
