SCRAPBOOK: Nov. 27, 2016

Odessa American (TX)

Nov. 27--PART

The Pan American Round Table met Nov. 17 hosted by Yollie Wilkins and Sonya Haynie. A report was given on the celebration of 100 years of the International Tables. The organization was formed 100 years ago at the Mengar Hotel in San Antonio, with a mission to promote knowledge, understanding, friendship and peace in all the countries of the Western Hemisphere. Ladies who attended a recent conference reported on activities and showed a collection of materials they collected at the meeting.

RETIRED TEACHERS

The Odessa Retired Teachers Association met Nov. 7, hosted by Mary Reeves. Thirteen members were present. Total membership is 346. Sara Easley was appointed chairman of the phone committee. Members of the committee will call other members to remind them about future meetings and special events. November is Foundation Month. Monetary donations will be collected and sent to state. Foundation funds are used for "Helping Hands" scholarships and new teacher projects. Reservations for the Christmas luncheon were due by Nov. 25.

Members can still pick up yearbooks.

SORORITY

The Gamma Tau Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa met Nov. 14 at The Egg & I. Nine members and one guest were in attendance. Virginia Tingley gave the devotional and prayer. Vickie Bredemeyer read the minutes from the last meeting, which were approved, and gave a report on fraternity education. Phyllis White gave the treasurer's report. Nancy Chapman gave a program on the state altruistic project, Fisher House. Books to be given in memory of Laura Turner were discussed. Members were asked to contact their representatives and senators about the TRS-Care retiree health insurance program. Goodies were delivered to schools in honor of Alpha Delta Kappa Founder's Day.

STUDY CLUB

The Progressive Study Club met Nov. 9 hosted by Jo Lynne Harwell. President Mary Reeves presided. Secretary Gloria Augesen read the minutes of the last meeting. Treasurer Cindy Parkis gave the treasurer's report and also gave a report on the garage sale fundraiser. Janice Whitworth was welcomed as a new member. Patsy Allen and Dana Ridder presented the program. The next meeting will be the Christmas luncheon at the Odessa Country Club.

UDC

The Permian Basin Chapter 2589 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy met Nov. 19. President Eleanor Edmondson led the opening ritual. Custodian Lisa Uhlhorn led the pledges to the flags and members read the American's Creed. Helen Cooper read Robert E. Lee's 1863 prayer to the troops. Ann Ellison read the minutes of the last meeting, which were approved. Helen Slusher read the treasurer's report for Toni Miles, who was absent.

Members wanting the basic UDC set of pins were asked to get in touch with Slusher. Also, members were reminded to turn in gifts for veterans in Big Spring by Dec. 1. Confederate Heroes Day will be celebrated at the Fairview Cemetery in Midland in January. The Jackson-Lee dinner is planned for that night.

Edmondson reported on the SCV meeting held in Midland with Camp 1441. The location of the Confederate flags flown by Gaylon Harrison on I-20 was discussed. The chapter voted to support the new division president's project that will help fund the Permian Basin Honor Flight, which gives World War II veterans an opportunity to visit Washington, D.C., to experience firsthand the memorials built in their honor.

Ellison presented the program, "Disease Followed Them Everywhere." Members learned that more soldiers in both armies died from disease than from bullets because the men were always crowded together in the camps and sanitary conditions did not exist. The measles caused the largest number of soldier deaths.

Johnny Reb played "Dixie" on his banjo and the meeting was adjourned.
