San Dimas car show to benefit public safety volunteers

Inland Valley Daily Bulletin (CA)

July 25--SAN DIMAS -- They endure grueling physical tests and fine-tune firearms' expertise to become reserve sheriff's deputies.

They face challenges against nature and go unafraid into wilderness regions to bring people safely home or to offer closure for families. They reassure folks wanting to explore the world that their homes and possessions will be safe when they return.

They use their love of horses to add an extra layer of protection to public patrols. They take technical skills to communicate in major emergencies and disasters when no one else can. They explore possible law-enforcement careers by doing grass-roots public service.

"They" are the men, woman, teenagers and college students belonging to at least one of the six volunteer groups serving the sheriff's San Dimas station. And, except for the members of Sheriff's Reserves Company 8 who are paid a taxable $1 a year to be covered by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's disability insurance, they all do what they do for free.

On Sunday, the San Dimas Sheriff's Boosters Club will hold its 22nd annual Shine It! Show It! Classic Car Show to raise funds to support the reserve deputies, Mountain Search and Rescue Team, Civilian Volunteers Group, Mounted Posse, Disaster Communications Services and Explorers Post 80 at the sheriff's San Dimas station.

The show, which raised $10,000 last year, will stretch along Bonita Avenue from Iglesia Street to Cataract Avenue from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., said activist Laura Alvarado and Boosters Club President Sylvia Chapman, co-chairs of the show planning committee.

Sgt. Ray Roth and Deputy Matthew Bodell supervise the station's reserves, posse, rescue team and, with deputy/adviser Bernard Ojeda, the Explorers.

Civilian employee Chris Mackenzie oversees the Civilian Volunteers Group, whose members help detective, jail and front-desk personnel, handle paperwork, computers and Kid Print, conduct vacation checks and assist with traffic control during public programs.

The Disaster Communication Services' licensed shortwave radio operators work under the authority of the sheriff's Emergency Operations Bureau.

Rescue team mountaineers and logistics supporters, nicknamed the "fantastic flapjack flippers," will cook and serve $6 breakfasts of pancakes, bacon, eggs, coffee and juice from 7 to 10 a.m. on Exchange Place at Bonita. Pancake proceeds purchase additional equipment and supplies for the team's swift-water, cliff-hanger and wilderness rescues, searches for lost and injured hikers and airplane crashes, cars over the sides of mountains and natural disaster responses.

Volunteers from the six groups, including 15- to 21-year-old Explorers, will help the show's volunteers.

Entertainers are The Impulse Band, which plays oldies, R&B, soul, Latin pop, classic rock and contemporary tunes; The Wave Invasion Quartet, surf and instrumental music; jazz saxophonist/singer Naomi Balcombs and disc jockey 8-Track Carl.

"This family event generates large amounts of money for the volunteer groups," Bodell said. "It's open to all ages and gives people a chance to help the volunteers who help them and have fun while they're doing it."
