REP. TOM O’HALLERAN TO VOTE AGAINST AMERICAN HEALTH CARE ACT
Congressional Documents & Publications
Washington, DC - Today, Congressman Tom O'Halleran (AZ-01) announced his plan to vote against the Republican-led American Health Care Act (AHCA) due, in part, to the negative impact it will have on rural hospitals, low-income families, and Americans nearing retirement age.
"I will not vote for a bill that fails to improve affordability for Arizonans and sends premiums skyrocketing for older, poorer Americans," said Rep. O'Halleran. "While the ACA was far from perfect, it provided coverage for millions of Americans. We should be focused on working together to fix the flaws in our health care system, not playing politics with the lives of our most vulnerable citizens."
Following analysis of the GOP health care bill by the Congressional Budget Office, Rep. O'Halleran expressed his concerns with the rising premium prices, capping Medicaid funding for states, and the elimination of price protections for seniors under the AHCA. In addition, the law fails to offer adequate funding for rural and tribal health care, reducing access to medical facilities and professionals in communities across the country.
"We owe it to the American people to find a bipartisan solution that protects the investments we have made in rural communities and brings down the cost of coverage and care," continued O'Halleran.
Since January, Rep. O'Halleran authored two letters to Speaker of the House Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell asking them to consider tribal health care protections in their ACA replacement plans.
