WASHINGTON, Jan. 8 -- Rep. Albio Sires, D-New Jersey, issued the following statement on Jan. 7 regarding the sequence of earthquakes that are affecting Puerto Rico:
"Today, my thoughts are with our fellow American citizens affected by ongoing earthquakes in Puerto Rico. The governor of Puerto Rico, Wanda Vazquez, declared a state of emergency this morning after a 6.4 magnitude earthquake left many Puerto Ricans homeless and without access to running water or electricity.
"Puerto Ricans are still waiting for the United States government to step up its recovery efforts after Hurricane Maria and will now need more help than ever.
"With seismic activity expected to continue in the coming days, Puerto Ricans cannot afford another stalled relief effort by the Trump Administration. I will continue monitoring the situation and stand ready to help."
