GREENBELT, Md., July 5 -- Rep. Steny H. Hoyer, D-Md., issued the following news release:
This morning, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) hosted a roundtable with health care advocates to discuss the impact TrumpCare and proposed cuts to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) would have on Maryland families.
"TrumpCare, combined with proposed cuts to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the President's budget, would have severe consequences for the most vulnerable in our state," said Congressman Hoyer. "The Republican TrumpCare bill would kick Americans off coverage, increase premiums and out-of-pocket costs, impose an age tax on older Americans, and allow insurers to discriminate against individuals with pre-existing conditions. The bill would also drastically cut Medicaid, which would mean vulnerable children, seniors in nursing homes, and those with disabilities would lose access to quality care. If enacted, TrumpCare would be devastating for thousands of families in Maryland and across the nation."
"The President's proposed cuts to NIH are also dangerous," continued Congressman Hoyer. "Rather than sharply cutting NIH funding, we ought to be investing in lifesaving medical research. I thank the representatives who joined me today for highlighting the real impact of these proposals and voicing their strong opposition to them. Together, we will continue to urge my Republican colleagues to abandon their extreme TrumpCare bill, and instead work to strengthen the Affordable Care Act so that more families have access to quality, affordable health care. I hope Republicans will also join me in advocating for the critical work being done at the NIH."
At today's roundtable, Congressman Hoyer was joined by representatives from the American Lung Association, the Alzheimer's Association, Cancer Action Network, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the Epilepsy Foundation, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the March of Dimes, and the National Association of Mental Illness.
