Property insurance crisis lingers as Florida legislative session closes
NBC - 8 WFLA (Tampa, FL)
TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) -- State lawmakers are expected to finalize the state's budget of more than $117 billion on the final day of this year's legislative session.
It includes a handful of funding measures to address Florida's spiraling property insurance crisis.
It's been nearly a year and a half since Hurricane Ian hit the state and storm damage is still on full display on the rooftop of Fred Scherger's home in North Port.
"I don't know that you can put a price tag for what my wife and I have been through," Scherger said. "It's coming home to a tarped roof, and a ripped tarp at that."
Scherger is still wrangling with his insurance company and says his claims for roof repairs have been ignored.
"I have received nothing," Scherger said.
Now Scherger is dealing with more disappointment as the legislative session ends.
Conversations about property insurance were minimal, however there will be a small discount on premiums which will amount to a $60 savings per household.
