With now more than 8,400 structures destroyed over nearly a quarter million acres, including roads, schools, power grids, major public facilities, businesses and homes, the affected communities will need to rebuild virtually from scratch. The first priority will be re-establishing public rights of way to deliver essential services and undertake a thorough assessment of the extent of the damage. Looking ahead, the focus should be on how to rebuild our major public infrastructure in a way that doesn't replicate but improves upon what was there before, technologically as well as in terms of location and fire resistance. Localities, as well as the state and federal government are going to need to begin thinking about how to create long-range investment and strategies needed to raise the capital to rebuild."
