PID returns nearly $133M to families, consumers

The Pennsylvania Insurance Department (PID) announced that it saved Pennsylvanians nearly $133 million in 2025 because of PID's regulatory efforts to protect consumers by putting money back where it belongs, according to a PID release.

Through investigations, consumer complaints and enforcement actions, PID recovered $16.4 million in restitution for Pennsylvanians who had funds stolen, underpaid or had their money mishandled because of errors or bad conduct.

Additionally, PID helped connect almost 4,700 Pennsylvanians to more than $116 million in lost life insurance benefits and annuities through the NAIC's Life Insurance Policy Locator service.

"Every dollar recovered is a win for a Pennsylvanian who was treated unfairly," said Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner Michael Humphreys. "When insurers make mistakes or break the rules, we step in. We're here to help consumers and always have their best interests in mind, especially when it comes to recovering funds they're rightfully owed. We continue to encourage consumers to reach out to our team with any complaints or concerns with an insurer or agent."

PID protects Pennsylvanians by regulating insurance companies and insurance professionals such as agents. The PID investigates consumer complaints, examines insurance companies' practices of alleged misconduct and enforces insurance laws and regulations. When violations occur, PID works swiftly to correct the issue, which often results in a consumer receiving a refund, payment or credit.

During 2025, PID received more than 15,500 complaints and conducted multiple examinations and investigations that led to real financial results for Pennsylvanians. PID helped Pennsylvanians by fixing claim errors, recovering stolen funds, refunding overcharges and ensuring compliance with laws.

Additionally, Pennsylvania law requires all companies selling life insurance policies in Pennsylvania to participate in a service that helps family members of a deceased loved one find a lost life insurance policy.
