Perry Village renews property and casualty insurance policy for 2023 [The News-Herald, Willoughby, Ohio]

Jan. 17—Perry Village Council has authorized the renewal of an insurance plan that provides property and casualty coverage for the community's government.

Council, at its Jan. 12 meeting, approved a contract that will keep the village insured for property and casualty incidents by Glatfelter Public Practice.

Perry Village obtains that coverage through Gehring's and Benedict Insurance agencies. These agencies presented an offer to Perry Village to renew its policy for an annual overall premium of $32,460.

"This represents a $791 increase over the expiring policy," Insurance Agent Aaron Joslin wrote to Perry Village government leaders in a letter that accompanied a copy of the plan.

Joslin also wrote that all buildings and content limits in the policy had been increased by a 4 percent inflation factor. Adjustments also were made for changes in the village government's annual payroll.

In addition, Joslin said that based on this year's risk control evaluation, the village was being offered a quote to increase coverage to the Administration Building and Police Department on Center Road to $1,448,940 from $1,040,004.

He advised that the village accept the proposed $400,000 increase in building coverage, which would cost the village an additional $546 annually.

Council agreed to include the additional building coverage in its policy, but decided against paying an extra premium for earthquake coverage.

In other legislative action, council:

—Approved the reappointment of Jean Schonauer as council president.

—Approved the reappointment of Troy Hager as village street commissioner and road supervisor.

Hager also serves as Perry Village police chief. The Ohio Revised Code states that a police chief is eligible to be appointed as street commissioner in any village for a term of one year.

Council also heard first readings of several resolutions. These measures, which will likely receive the maximum three readings before being voted on by council included:

—Appointing John and Barbara Howley to the village Park and Recreation Committee.

—Authorizing the mayor to take all action needed for the village to participate in the 2023 Northeast Ohio Public Energy Council Community Event Sponsorship Program.

Through this program, NOPEC awards financial grants to government entities to sponsor community events that offer free admission.

—Authorizing the village to pay a $5,000 subsidy to help fund the Perry Area Joint Recreation District.

Financial subsidies are sought each year from Perry and North Perry villages and Perry Township, as they are all communities served by the district.
