Patent Issued for Biometric authentication system (USPTO 11328280): United Services Automobile Association

Insurance Daily News

2022 JUN 01 (NewsRx) -- By a News Reporter-Staff News Editor at Insurance Daily News -- According to news reporting originating from Alexandria, Virginia, by NewsRx journalists, a patent by the inventors Medina, III, Reynaldo (San Antonio, TX, US), Tougas, Brian (San Antonio, TX, US), Wright, Susan Elizabeth (San Antonio, TX, US), filed on October 11, 2019, was published online on May 10, 2022.

The assignee for this patent, patent number 11328280, is United Services Automobile Association (San Antonio, Texas, United States).

Reporters obtained the following quote from the background information supplied by the inventors: “Shopping at a physical retail store involves a familiar process. A consumer first obtains one or more items from the retail store, and then the consumer stands in a checkout line to purchase the one or more items. Often, the consumer pays for the one or more items using a physical credit card or a digital credit card stored on the consumer’s mobile device. However, such a conventional system requires the consumer to carry either a physical form of payment or a mobile device that includes a digital form of payment. Thus, conventional payment systems at retail stores require consumers to carry some form of physical device or hardware to purchase an item.

“The drawings have not necessarily been drawn to scale. For example, the dimensions of some of the elements in the figures may be expanded or reduced to help improve the understanding of the embodiments of the present disclosure. Similarly, some components and/or operations may be separated into different blocks or combined into a single block for the purposes of discussion of some of the embodiments of the present disclosure. Moreover, while embodiments of the present disclosure are amenable to various modifications and alternative forms, specific embodiments have been shown by way of example in the drawings and are described in detail below. The intention, however, is not to limit the disclosure to the particular embodiments described. On the contrary, the disclosure is intended to cover all modifications, equivalents, and alternatives falling within the scope of the disclosure as defined by the appended claims.”

In addition to obtaining background information on this patent, NewsRx editors also obtained the inventors’ summary information for this patent: “Various embodiments of the present disclosure generally relate to using a person’s biometric data obtained at a retail store to authorize a transaction initiated by that person at the retail store. Unlike conventional technology, the technology disclosed in the present disclosure minimizes the physical devices or hardware carried by the person at the retail store for performing a transaction. Specifically, various embodiments of the present disclosure relate to (1) a point-of-sale (POS) device for obtaining a set of biometric data and a password from a person; (2) one or more authentication systems for determining whether the set of biometric data matches information associated with previously stored biometric data of the person; and (3) an authorization system for authorizing the transaction by the person if the obtained set of biometric data and password matches information associated with previously stored biometric data and password associated with the person.”

The claims supplied by the inventors are:

“1.
