WASHINGTON, Oct. 4 -- The office of Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., issued the following news release:
U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill today voted to break inaction by Congressional leaders on renewal of the critical Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), which covers nearly 80,000 Missouri children, and released the following statement:
"CHIP is a literal life-safer for Missouri kids, which is why I'm proud to support it, and why I'm equally discouraged that Congressional leaders let us get to this point of letting it expire. This critical program that's helped so many Missouri families should be a shining example of what all of us--on both sides of the aisle--should rally around in a bipartisan way."
The Senate Finance Committee today approved the renewal of funding for the CHIP program, which expired last week.
McCaskill is a longtime supporter of the CHIP program, and has consistently voted to renew its funding. Passed in 1997 and reauthorized with strong bipartisan support in 2007, 2009, and 2015 CHIP provides comprehensive health insurance to millions of children in families with incomes too low to afford private insurance.
