The Austin, Texas-based company said it had net income of $6.65 per share. Earnings, adjusted for investment gains, came to $6.18 per share.
The insurance provider posted revenue of $224.4 million in the period.
National Western Life shares have decreased slightly since the beginning of the year. The stock has climbed 46 percent in the last 12 months.
