Naches house fire caused by wood left near stove

Jan. 27--NACHES, Wash. -- A firefighter's wife returning from her veterinarian's office acted quickly when she saw smoke coming from her home Wednesday afternoon, officials said.

When she pulled up to the house in the 300 block of Moxee Avenue around 4:30 p.m., she saw the windows turning dark and smoke rising from the roof, said Captain Dan Mansfield with the Naches Fire Department.

No flames were visible from outside, but when firefighters entered the home they found flames near a wood-burning stove, Mansfield said.

"The wood caught fire from radiant heat," Mansfield said.

The single-story, 940-square-foot house was built in 1920, according to records kept by the Yakima County Assessor's Office. Mansfield said the house sustained fire and smoke damage to its structure and contents.

Mansfield estimated the cost of damages to be around $50,000.

No one was home at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported, Mansfield said.

The home belonged to the family of Naches firefighter Jared Sutton and his family, including two children.

Capt. Don Swanson said Sutton expects most costs to be covered by insurance, but the family is accepting donations or gift cards for clothing for the children and for expenses not reimbursed.

Clothing is for a toddler girl, size 3T, and an infant girl, size 12M.
