Medicare enrollment deadline in Lee County extended to Jan. 7

Dec. 04--The deadline for enrollment in Medicare has been extended to Jan. 7 for residents in Lee County as a result of Hurricane Florence, according to an announcement by North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey.

Open enrollment for Medicare would normally end Friday for coverage beginning Jan. 1, but residents of Lee County and other counties declared major disaster areas have been granted an extended Special Enrollment Period to sign up for 2019 benefits.

The Special Enrollment Period ends Jan. 7 for coverage beginning Feb. 1, giving residents an extra month to enroll in a Medicare health or prescription drug plan.

Residents in Chatham, Moore and Harnett counties are also eligible for the Special Enrollment Period.
