Umergency stores information such as medical insurance cards, contact names and phone numbers of roommates and school staff, resources such as a suicide prevention hotline, first responders' names and numbers -- and each college's hotlines, clinics, emergency staff, dormitories and other information.
"There is a one-click 'urgent alert' button," Schenbaum said. "If the student hits that, it pops up on a Google map, and the parents will be able to see where he or she is, using the phone's GPS."
Schenbaum said the app can help ease anxiety when parents are sending their children out of state. Security measures have been added to prevent personal data from being stolen, he said.
"Parents need peace of mind," Schenbaum said. "If this creates even a little bit of that, we will have accomplished something."
