Loeffler Under Fire for GOP Health Care Policies That Gut Pre-Existing Conditions Protections As She Pledges to Back Party '100%'

Targeted News Service (Press Releases)

ATLANTA, Georgia, Jan. 17 -- The Georgia Democratic Party issued the following news release:

* * *

- As she stands "100%" in lockstep with Washington Republicans, Loeffler still silent on GOP-backed lawsuit to end health care coverage for millions and critical protections for pre-existing conditions

* * *

"Political mega-donor" Senator Kelly Loeffler said she is "100% supportive" of Washington Republican leaders -- including their health care policies that would gut protections for the 1.8 million Georgians with pre-existing conditions -- and is facing scrutiny for the position.

Yesterday, Georgia health care advocates came together to call on Loeffler to denounce the GOP-backed lawsuit that would end health care coverage for millions and critical protections for pre-existing conditions as part of Republicans' push to gut the health care law.

Nearly all of Loeffler's fellow Senate Republicans have stood in lockstep to try and rip away federal health care protections that ensure Georgians with pre-existing conditions have access to affordable, quality care, including Loeffler's fellow Georgia Senator David Perdue who "of course" supports the lawsuit.

Now, with President Donald Trump promising to bring back Republicans' failed health care agenda after the 2020 elections, it's time for Loeffler to answer whether she "of course" stands with Perdue and Senate Republicans like she's "100%" promised to.

"Georgians deserve to know why Kelly Loeffler is pledging to '100%' support her party's agenda that includes stripping away protections for the 1.8 million Georgians with pre-existing conditions and ending health care coverage for millions across the country," said Alex Floyd, spokesman for the Democratic Party of Georgia. "The GOP's health care plans would be a disaster for Georgians who never got a say before Kelly Loeffler bought herself a temporary Senate appointment. They deserve to hear her explain why she's willing to be a rubber stamp for Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans' reckless health care plans."

Georgia Recorder: Georgia Dems push new GOP U.S. Senator to oppose Obamacare repeal

* A Georgia health care coalition and a group of state legislators are pushing U.S. Sen. Kelly Loeffler to publicly oppose the ongoing dismantling of the Affordable Care Act, which they say provides important protection for women's health care.

* Pro-Obamacare advocate Protect Our Care, Sen. Jen Jordan, Rep. Pat Gardner, Georgia Democratic Party Chair Nikema Williams were among those at a Tuesday press conference at the state Capitol pleading for the newly appointed Republican senator to make a public statement against the health care law's repeal, a stance that would put her at odds with President Donald Trump.

* So far, Loeffler's been publicly adamant in her support of the president's policies.

* In December, a federal court agreed with a Texas Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling the law was unconstitutional after Congress repealed the tax penalizing people for not having health insurance.

* The U.S. Supreme Court should promptly act on the case and Loeffler should fight for the protections provided to women by Obamacare, Jordan said.

* "Every Georgia Republican, including Senator Loeffler, who fails to denounce this lawsuit owns its consequences," said the Smyrna Democrat.

* [Loeffler] publicly supports Trump on many issues including border security and impeachment proceedings but isn't on record about the Affordable Care Act.

* Loeffler might play a role in new health care reform if a court invalidates Obamacare.

* Gardner, an Atlanta Democrat, said Loeffler should understand the importance of quality health care after serving on hospital and mental health boards.

* Repealing the law could result in women paying much higher health insurance costs, or losing access to free birth control.
