For those of you who wish they had flood insurance after Ian but feel it is too expensive, you do not need to pay full price if you don't have a mortgage. The trade off is you will get less in insurance money in the event of flooding in your house.
Talk to your agent about getting less coverage for a lower premium. I have done this for about five years now. I pay about $1,300 a year and estimate if I had a 2-foot flood in my house I would get about $14,000 to repair. I think I could repair the damage for that and add some savings if it cost more.
Flood insurance is not out of reach if you want this compromise.
