Jessie Misskelley Jr., one of “West Memphis Three,” arrested over the weekend
Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN)
Nov. 27--Jessie Misskelley Jr., one of the "West Memphis Three" convicted of killing three boys in the 1990's, faces a court appearance Monday after a weekend arrest for driving without a license, no proof of liability insurance and driving with one or no headlights.
Misskelley, 42, was arrested at 9:27 p.m. Saturday, according to the Crittenden County Sheriff's Office jail roster. His bond was set at $395 for lacking proof of insurance, and $195 each for the headlight and driving without license charges.
The charges are misdemeanors, and it is unclear whether they would have any impact on the Alford Plea that freed Misskelley from prison in 2011.
Kelley was convicted in 1994, along with Damien Echols and Jason Baldwin, of killing three West Memphis boys a year earlier. The mutilated bodies of Steve Branch, Christopher Byers and Michael Moore were found in a ditch.
The deaths and subsequent convictions of Misskelley, Echols and Baldwin led to a nearly two-decade debate over whether the three convicted perpetrators actually committed the crimes. The case generated several documentaries and drew Hollywood star power to the defense of the trio that became known as the "West Memphis Three."
After a 2010 Arkansas Supreme Court ruling regarding new DNA evidence, the three negotiated what is known as an Alford Plea that allowed them to claim innocence while admitting there was enough evidence to convict them. Judge David Laser accepted the pleas and released the three from prison.
