House bipartisan coalition forces vote to reverse ‘skyrocketing’ healthcare costs

STAFF REPORTImperial Valley Press

WASHINGTON, D.C.—A group of physician-lawmakers and moderate Democrats stepped up pressure on House leadership Wednesday, calling for an immediate extension of Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits as millions of Americans grapple with a sharp spike in health insurance premiums that took effect on New Year's Day.

The "New Dem Doctors"—a caucus of healthcare professionals within the New Democrat Coalition—joined Health Care Working Group Chair Terri Sewell (D-AL) to demand a "clean" extension of the subsidies. The push comes just 24 hours before a high-stakes floor vote, which was forced by a bipartisan discharge petition that successfully bypassed House Speaker Mike Johnson's leadership.

The expiration of the enhanced tax credits on January 1 has left an estimated 20 million Americans facing an average premium increase of more than 100%. For many families, the lapse means paying thousands of dollars more per year for the same coverage they held in 2025.

"This vote comes at a critical moment in an ongoing, created healthcare crisis," the group said in a joint statement. "On January 1st, more than 20 million Americans already struggling with the out-of-control cost of living were forced to pay thousands of dollars more per year for their health insurance."

A bipartisan breakaway

The upcoming vote is a rare procedural defeat for GOP leadership. Every House Democrat, joined by a handful of Republicans representing swing districts, signed a discharge petition to bring the measure to the floor. These Republicans have argued that the premium hikes are untenable for their constituents, particularly as the Trump administration and Congressional GOP leaders have prioritized other fiscal reforms over the ACA extensions.

Democratic doctors in the House, including Reps. Kim Schrier (D-WA), Ami Bera (D-CA), Raul Ruiz (D-CA), Kelly Morrison (D-MN), and Herb Conaway (D-NJ) framed the issue not just as a fiscal policy but as a public health emergency.

"As physicians, we know firsthand the devastating effects of these cruel cuts across the country," the lawmakers stated. "House Republicans must put the well-being of their constituents over their extreme agenda and join Democrats in lowering healthcare costs and saving lives."

The impact on the ground

The enhanced subsidies, originally enacted during the pandemic and extended in 2022, capped health insurance premiums at 8.5% of a household's income. With those caps now gone, middle-income families who previously qualified for assistance are seeing some of the steepest increases.

Health policy analysts warn that if the extension is not passed quickly, many healthy enrollees may drop their coverage entirely to save money, potentially destabilizing the insurance markets and driving costs even higher for those who remain.
