WASHINGTON, July 1 -- Sen. Martin Heinrich, D-New Mexico, issued the following news release on June 30, 2021:
U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) lauded President Joe Biden signing into law S.J. Res 14 to reinstate methane emissions standards to protect public health and tackle the climate crisis. Senator Heinrich, along with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), and U.S. Senators Angus King (I-Maine) and Ed Markey (D-Mass.), introduced S.J. Res 14, a resolution of disapproval under the Congressional Review Act (CRA), which will nullify the Trump administration's 2020 Methane Rescission Rule and reinstate U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards for methane emissions from the oil and gas industry and the regulation of air pollution from transmission and storage facilities.
"Today, we put a down payment on the fight against the climate crisis. I'm proud to champion this effort to restore responsible controls on methane emissions - a leading contributor to climate change - and protect the health of our communities.
"It's time to keep moving forward with real, meaningful actions that leave our children with a healthier planet," said Heinrich.
In April, Senator Heinrich, a member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, delivered a speech on the Senate Floor ahead of the vote on the resolution.
