WASHINGTON, March 19 -- The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' National Institutes of Health announced that it intends to award a discretionary grant for research focused on reducing health disparities in tobacco use in the U.S.

This funding opportunity is open to state, county, city, township and special district governments; independent school districts; private, public and state controlled institutions of higher education; public housing authorities/Indian housing authorities; Native American tribal governments and organizations; non-profits; non-profits having a 501(c)3 status with the IRS; for profits; small businesses; Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian serving institutions; Asian American Native American Pacific Islander serving institutions; eligible agencies of the federal government; faith-based or community-based organizations; Hispanic-serving institutions; Historically Black Colleges and Universities; Indian/Native American tribal governments; regional organizations; tribally controlled colleges; and U.S. territory or possession

The agency description of the grant states: "Specifically, this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is intended to stimulate scientific inquiry focused on innovative tobacco control policies including, but not limited to, those addressing health economics (e.g. tax and pricing policies, insurance coverage for tobacco dependence treatment). Applicants may propose projects in which the primary outcome of interest is on reducing tobacco use health disparities in vulnerable populations by utilizing tobacco prevention and control strategies. The long-term goal of this FOA is to reduce health disparities in health outcomes thereby reducing the excess disease burden of tobacco use within these groups."
