Fraudulent $300K auto insurance scam uncovered in Central PA
Franklin County Free Press (PA)
In Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, three individuals, Kwa'rai Samuel (24), Lori Fish (50), and Kevin Hartung (45), along with two fictitious auto body repair shops named LKR Auto Body and Hopper's Foreign Auto Body and Parts, are charged with defrauding insurance companies of over $300,000.
The fraudulent operation involved obtaining 28 automobile insurance policies from four different companies using false information, stolen identities, and details sourced from car lots and online. The trio then filed 42 fraudulent claims for non-existent accidents, supported by fabricated documents and photographs, aiming at high-end, luxury cars to maximize payouts.
Despite the absence of police reports or witnesses, they managed to receive significant insurance payments. The scam included altering voices on calls to insurance companies, with Samuel at times impersonating different genders. Samuel and Hartung face charges including false insurance claims, insurance fraud, theft by deception, and identity theft, while Fish is charged with insurance fraud and weapons offenses. They are currently detained, awaiting preliminary hearings set for April 11.
