Fort Wayne Board of Safety revokes two more cab company's operating permits

Aug. 07--The Fort Wayne Board of Public Safety voted Thursday to revoke the operating permits of Cardinal Taxi and Skyline Taxi because their vehicle liability insurance doesn't comply with city ordinance.

The companies, which operate one taxi cab each, have 30 days from Friday to change insurance plans and to seek operating permit reinstatement from the board. The move follows board members' vote Monday to revoke the operating permit of Yellow Taxi Cab for lack of vehicle liability insurance and other problems.

All three companies have vehicle insurance through Haulers Insurance, Steve Sorgen, who works for the Fort Wayne Police Department in taxi cab management, told the board. The company is based in Columbia, Tenn., it says on the its website, www.haulersinsurance.com.

The Haulers' vehicle insurance policies held by Yellow Cab, Cardinal Taxi and Skyline Taxi all allow the insurer to cancel the policy with 12 days notice, which is the minimum required by the State of Indiana, Sorgen said. Fort Wayne city ordinance requires cab companies to carry liability insurance that provides 30 days notice of policy cancellation.

All three companies must find other insurers if they want to seek reinstatement of their operating permit, board members said.

In other business, the board:

--Learned police Officer Diane Rogers served two, two-day suspensions without pay in July for failing to respond to police calls, Fort Wayne Police Chief Garry Hamilton said.

--Learned Officer Eric M. Thompson served a one day suspension without pay in July for being absent without leave. Thompson mistakenly thought he had arranged to take a day off.

--Voted to table until next meeting police Sgt. Brian L. Burton's appeal of a letter of reprimand he received for alleged improper conduct in an off-duty situation, Hamilton said. Board members wanted more time to study the information in the appeal.
