Florida woman charged after echoing words from United Healthcare CEO murder

Brendan Sanders, The Telegraph, Alton, Ill.Telegraph

Dec. 18—A Florida woman is facing charges after has been charged with threatening a health insurance company by repeating words engraved on bullet casings found at the scene of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson's murder.

Briana Boston, 42 and mother of three is accused of saying "Delay, deny, depose, you people are next" while speaking on a recorded line with a Blue Cross Blue Shield representative about a denied medical claim.

Boston was subsequently charged with threats to conduct a mass shooting or act of terrorism. A judge set her bond at $100,000 in which she paid $10,000. The judge confined Boston to home arrest and GPS monitoring, though Boston is allowed to leave home for work, court appearances, attorney and medical appointments, church and weekly shopping.

Boston was speaking with a representative from Blue Cross Blue Shield after she had been told that her medical claim was denied.

According to ABC News, when Lakeland Police confronted Boston about the perceived threats, she apologized and said that she "used those words because it's what is in the news right now," according to the arrest affidavit. Boston then told authorities she does not own any guns and is not a threat, but went on to say that health care companies "deserve karma" and that they are "evil."

Boston's apparent threats nearly echo the words that were engraved on the bullet shell casings that authorities recovered from the scene where United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson was fatally shot earlier this month. Those engraved words were "deny," "defend" and "depose."

In an article written by Hearst Media's Robin Bradshaw, the shell casings from bullets found at the crime scene contained the words "delay," "deny," and "depose" — a phrase used in the insurance industry, according to Insurance Business. Since the murder, United Healthcare has come under fire for its claims denials, which some observers suggest may have been a motive for the crime.

Accounts on TikTok have come to Boston's defense, stating that the justice system would rather make a statement out of her rather than go after actual dangerous individuals. TikTok user TizzyEnt, who has 6.7 million followers, noted the story of a woman who had been captured on film putting rat poison on her husband's food which Florida police refused to act upon, yet they would still charge Boston with threats of terrorism.

Daniel Boston, Briana's husband, created a GoFundMe account to raise money for her bond payment, legal fees and other expenses. As of Wednesday, Dec. 18, the GoFundMe has raised $64,750 out of a $75,000 goal.
