Sept. 09--SHAMOKIN -- A Friday afternoon fire in Shamokin that damaged a home at 39 S. 7th St. is not suspicious, according to Shamokin Fire Marshal Ray Siko, of the Shamokin Police Department
An investigation into the incident revealed the point of origin on the floor of the second story bedroom, but Siko said the cause is undetermined. The investigation is ongoing.
A male teenager was treated on scene for injuries, Siko said.
The boy was trying to extinguish the fire by stepping on it, but his sock caught fire. When he tried to pull the sock off, he burned his fingertips, Siko said.
Firefighters were alerted to the blaze at 4:48 p.m. By 5:33 p.m., the upper floor windows had blown out or been smashed by firefighters and the siding was charred but no flames were visible. Shamokin Battalion Chief Ken Pilkus said on Friday that all firefighters were released by about 8:45 p.m. Most of the damage was contained to the front bedroom and a portion of the attic.
Siko did not have a damage estimate and was unable to provide the names of the owner or renters. The owner has insurance, but the renter does not, he said.
Assistant Chief Bruce Rogers, who had command at the fire, was unable to be reached Friday.
The entire Shamokin Fire Bureau, Shamokin Fire Police and fire crews from Coal Township, Kulpmont'sEast End, Ralpho Township and Atlas responded to the fire.
