Fire destroys storage shed, damages carriage house at Roger Williams Park
"Losing the building is a shame, but nobody was injured and we're thankful for that. That's what is important," said Mayor
The fire began in the shed, located behind administrative offices at the historic carriage house, at about
Shortly after the building ignited, there were "early explosions" that likely came from "propane or fertilizer" stored inside the shed, Paré said. There were workers inside the building when the fire began, but they were able to get out, he said.
"We're not sure how it started," Paré said.
The two-story wooden shed held a substantial amount of the city's park equipment, like "wood, tools, mowers and play equipment," said
Paré said there were initial water challenges when crews arrived at the scene because of the park's loop system. Firefighters were able to pull water from a nearby pond to douse the flames.
Several administrative offices are housed in the historic carriage house. Salem, who works in that building, said he had been told his office space was heavily damaged.
Elorza said the city is working on finding a new location for those park workers to report Tuesday.
As of
Vehicle and foot access have been cut off to the park, but Elorza said he expects it will be open Tuesday.
