May 17--SOUTH BEND -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency has opened its second Disaster Recovery Center in the region in response to the historic flooding in February. The center is located in South Bend.
The center is designed to help both individuals and business owners impacted by February's historic flooding. The first center in the region opened Friday in Elkhart.
The center is located at the Leighton Center, 534 N. Michigan St., and will be open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week.
Recovery specialists from FEMA, the U.S. Small Business Administration and the state of Indiana are available to provide assistance to individuals filling out their applications or updating their status.
According to FEMA, the registration process is the first step in recovery and requires information including insurance policies and bank information for possible direct transfer of funds. Survivors are encouraged to register before visiting a DRC.
The U.S. SBA offers federal disaster loans for businesses of all sizes, private non-profit organizations, homeowners and renters. The SBA is the government's primary source of money for the long-term rebuilding of disaster-damaged property.
Individuals can register online at DisasterAssistance.gov, by calling the FEMA helpline at 800-621-3362 for voice, 711 and Video Relay Service. Individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing or have a speech disability and use a TTY can call 800-462-7585.
